Vitamin A & Other Drug Interactions

- Check with your doctor for interactions between vitamin A and any other medications.
- Medications that decrease GI absorption of vitamin A: aluminum antacids, bisacodyl and mineral oil (laxatives), cholestyramine (cholesterol-lowering), fenfluramine (diet pill), and neomycin (oral antibiotic). Alcohol may decrease vitamin A storage or absorption.
- High doses of vitamin E, greater than 600 IU per day, have been shown to interfere with beta-carotene absorption and conversion to vitamin A.
- Oral contraceptives have been shown to increase vitamin A levels independent of supplementation.
